WriTing GRoup
Our Place - Community of Hope runs a weekly creative writing group led by the amazing Toronto writer and editor, Peter Carter. Over the years, Peter has enthusiastically dedicated time, insight, and writing wisdom, and also encouraged everyone to write in a way that is most comfortable for them, be that poetry, skits, prose, short stories, book and movie reviews, or stories about their mental health journeys. It's a truly magical group of very talented individuals.
Over the years, participants come and go, and re-engage. Everyone is welcome. We are always blessed with a handful of highly valued "regulars", who attend most weeks.
Here are a few things that make Our Place writing group special: participants write about what they would like... there are no set themes or prompts; most participants write outside of the group hour; participants are encouraged to read their own work each week but do not have to do so; group facilitators (Peter, Kathryn, and Our Place staff) are happy to read pieces that participants would like to share but prefer not to read aloud themselves. Perhaps most importantly, the golden rules of group are offer up encouragement, praise, and support.
In 2021, we started to write joint, short, quirky pieces we have called "word cakes." Read on!
